ECHO

Location-based reminders that trigger when you arrive

Echo is a location-based reminder app for tasks tied to a particular place. Choose a location and a radius, then configure a reminder to trigger when the device enters that area.

Why I built it

Some things are easy to remember at home and somehow disappear from your head when you get somewhere. I wanted a reminder app that worked around places instead of relying only on a clock. With Echo, you choose a location, attach a reminder, and let the phone handle the nudge when you arrive.

A reminder to buy something at a shop or complete a task on campus is more useful when it appears at the right place. Echo explores how geofencing and local notifications can support that experience without requiring a cloud account.

Challenge

Background location behaviour varies across mobile operating systems. Battery restrictions, permissions, region limits, and background execution rules all affect when a location-triggered reminder can be delivered.

Action

Background location tasks and geofencing

I used expo-task-manager and location-region monitoring to handle background location events and trigger local notifications when supported operating-system conditions are met.

More efficient location lookup

I added caching and debouncing around forward and reverse geocoding to avoid unnecessary repeated requests when searching for and selecting places.

Result

Echo explores the engineering behind place-aware reminders, from background tasks to local notifications. It helped me understand the practical constraints of mobile location services and the importance of designing around them.
